OU/EDI Curriculum

OU/EDI Core Requirements

OU/EDI has aligned its curriculum to meet the education standards and requirements set by the IEDC Education and Certification Committees. These committees and OU/EDI have identified three core areas considered to be the building blocks of economic development: Business Retention and Expansion (BRE), Real Estate and Finance.

Each OU/EDI participant must study these 3 core areas by completing the following courses:

BRE
  • Workforce Development for Your Existing Business
  • Introduction to Business Retention & Expansion
  • Business Collaborations, Networks and Dislocations
  • Retention & Expansion Case Study
  • Retention & Expansion (day long)
 
Real Estate
  • Understanding the Land Development Process
  • Infrastructure – or – Principles & Practices of Real Estate
  • Land Development Lab
  • Land and Building Recycling (day long)
 
Finance
  • Finance Lab
  • Deal Structuring
  • Federal Tools

OU/EDI Elective Requirements

In addition to the core areas, OU/EDI has developed a curriculum intended to give the participants a broad based education and to develop the skills necessary to be successful economic developers, while at the same time, covering three of the topic areas necessary to prepare for IEDC’s CEcD certification exam.

Participants who have completed a BEDC (Basic Economic Development Course) or IEDC’s Introduction to Economic Development Course must complete two of the three elective areas of concentration. If you have not completed a BEDC or the Introduction course, you will be required to complete all three of the following elective areas of concentration.

Marketing
  • Community Marketing Plan Development
  • Effective Prospect Management
  • Using Technology for Target Marketing & Research
  • Evaluating Websites – or – Measurement and Evaluation of Marketing Programs
  • Design of Electronic and Printed Marketing Materials
  • Market Segmentation and Target Industry Studies

Managing Economic Development Organizations

  • Understanding People
  • Managing and Evaluating an Effective Office
  • Establishing and Sustaining a Regional Organization
  • Community Leadership
  • Politics and the Economic Developer

Strategic Planning

  • Strategic Planning Practices and Principles
  • Smart Growth Principles for Strategic Planning – or – Planning for
  • Strategic clusters
  • Strategic Planning Lab
  • Advanced Strategic Planning Theories

Graduates of OU/EDI will have completed 117 hours of course work and have met the education requirements necessary to sit for the CEcD exam. OU/EDI and IEDC have worked closely to ensure that OU/EDI graduates will have fulfilled the necessary classroom contact hours in the three core areas and the elective areas of concentration to satisfy the education requirements necessary to sit for the CEcD exam.
